Feature Spotlight: Qualification Groups (“OR” Logic)

Daniel Orofino • February 15, 2022

With AwardSpring’s new Qualification Groups feature (our version of “OR” logic), administrative  users have added flexibility when building out scholarship qualifications.

What is OR Logic?

Previously, it was only possible to set “AND” conditions to determine qualified applicants through our platform. “OR” logic was available only as a condition within some types of multi-select questions.

For example, with the previous logic, applicants would only meet qualifications if they met every requirement on an application. So, if your scholarship requirements were a 3.5 GPA or above and an ACT score of 25 or above, applicants who didn’t meet both requirements would not be eligible for the award.

With this new feature, however, AwardSpring users can set scholarship eligibility to depend on either GPA or ACT score, by creating multiple qualification groups, each with their own unique qualifiers — at no added cost.

Why use Qualification Groups?

If you want to drive eligibility for an award, there are several ways that Qualification Groups can help you do so. Here’s how this new feature upgrades your scholarship eligibility game:

  • Proper logic

Where your applications were previously limited to “OR” logic within multi-response questions, you can now create proper Qualification Groups based on applicant responses that meet one set of qualifications but not another.

  • Massive flexibility; reduced overhead

With more flexibility within scholarship applications, you can reduce overhead costs by consolidating scholarships.

  • Less time spent sorting

Qualification Groups are an easy way to eliminate extra steps from your process, so you can spend less time sorting and more time awarding.

  • More meaningful award decisions

When you are able to separate applicants into different groups based on which responses qualified them for an award, you have more insight into their backgrounds. This way, you can make better-informed scholarship award decisions.

How does our version of “OR” Logic work?

AwardSpring “OR” logic works using Qualification Groups to determine scholarship eligibility. Each scholarship can have up to four groups, meaning that four different sets of qualifications can indicate eligibility for each award.

Ready to activate “OR” logic? In the AwardSpring platform, click on the “Add qualification group” button under the “Qualifications” tab of any scholarship. Then, add qualifications to each group. Applicants will be sorted into groups based on which set of qualifications they meet.
